While I am an in-network provider for Blue Shield, my practice consists primarily of people who either choose not to use their mental health insurance benefits, or have no mental health insurance. Currently (Summer, Fall 2022) my practice may be open to new Blue Shield patients. If you have insurance with another carrier, such as Aetna, Cigna, United HealthCare, PacifiCare, Anthem Blue Cross, Magellan, etc., your therapy with me may be covered, using your "Out-of-Network Provider" benefit. I find that out-of-network coverage can work quite well, depending on the individual plan. I will submit claims to your insurance company and you will need to monitor insurance payments and pay copays at the time of service.
Currently all sessions are conducted using the telemed service doxy.me, due to pandemic concerns. Insurance companies have made modifications which allow claims for psychological services provided outside of the office setting.
Using your insurance to cover your visits to a psychologist, or any therapist, can be a mixed blessing. While your out-of-pocket expense will be reduced, so will your privacy. At the least, I will be required to submit a diagnosis, dates of service and charges to your insurance company. Many insurers require much more information, including justification that the treatment is medically necessary, statements about your capacity to benefit, treatment plan, and progress notes including therapeutic methods used and your response to them. Since neither you nor I have control of such information once it leaves my hands, you might reasonably choose not to use insurance coverage.
Paying for therapy is a big deal--for you and for me. I consider the discussion of fee, and money in general, to be an important part of the therapeutic process. I am upfront about arriving at a fair fee with you, and I expect you to pay that fee or copay at each session. Managing your insurance company is your responsibility, though I may be able to assist in that process. I've found that quicker and more accurate responses are often obtained more easily by the plan member (you) than by the provider. Money is a sticky issue for many people, and handling it responsibly in therapy can be both instructive and foundational.
Reduced fee services are available on a limited basis.
Payment may be made easily and optimally using the Zelle app through your bank, sending funds to my bank through my phone number 650-464-7323. As a back up, you can use a credit card through this website using the "Make a Payment" tab. Since PayPal charges service fees, your payment to me will be necessarily a bit higher to cover that. Full payment or co-payment is expected before or at the time of service. If you wish, I will provide you with a receipt monthly.
If you do not show up for your scheduled therapy appointment, and you have not notified me at least 24 hours in advance, you will be billed for the full fee for the session, which will be considerably higher than your copay if you are using insurance, currently $220. Insurance companies do not allow billing for missed sessions.
